Hacking – A Blogger’s nightmare! #Superbloggerchallenge2018

Each one of us has their own version of nightmare. A person, thing or a situation which you fear the most. A blogger’s worst fears come alive when they are denied access to their blog. Getting a mailer that your website content is hacked or has malicious content is a terrible thing. And, I have faced this issue recently.

Last weekend, I woke up to mailers that some of my web pages have been hacked by a third-party. To be honest, this was a first timer for me and I cannot express my anger in simpler words. Why would anyone want to do that? It’s not that my blog holds million dollars code which you would want to hack. It’s a simple blog where I share my thoughts of here and there.

Coming back to the point, few web pages are hacked – the solution should be simple enough. I will find the spam pages & delete them. Alas, things don’t run so easily. My password stopped working and login was disabled. Thus, I was out of the loop completely. It took lots of effort & support from the hosting provider to get back the access.

The story does not end here. Even after getting the access, it is a mess. I had to search and delete malicious content. The theme is amiss, background images are missing and the widgets are corrupted. As soon as I edit one widget, the other stops working. Thankfully, the blog posts were not deleted!

Recovering & setting up the blog is a time-consuming task and requires baby steps. On the bright side, I was thinking of renovating the blog since long. Now, I have the chance & time to get it done. I also learnt some major security lessons from this. Every dark cloud has silver lining. 🙂

I will get carried away and fill pages on this and few questions will still haunt me. Why does a hacker hack? What pleasures do you get from it? You need to find yourself a new hobby.

Have you ever faced this issue? How did you cope with it and what steps did you take to make your blog more secure? Do share your thoughts with us!
