Kids 101 – Lion or Lamb!

As parents you always have things to discuss with fellow parents. Few days back, I was talking to a new mom who asked me whether my son is a lion or a lamb? It took me sometime to understand the question & gave me the idea for the post too! 😉

How many of you would agree that kids are devils at home, but angels when out? They will shout at top of their lungs indoors, but when out they have zipped mouths. Roaring like a lion when mommy says to be quiet & becoming meek as a lamb when they meet relatives.

The little kiddo of mine is a living example of it. He will roam around the house & play peek-a-boo or even scare you like a ghost from the shadows. But, the moment we meet extended family, he goes into silent zone. No Hi’s or Hello’s, not even a sneeze. All the naughtiness vanishes with a poof!

I am sure I have seen smirk on his face when people praise him for good behavior. And, he thinks “Mummy wait till we reach home & I will be running around the house making mess!”. The moment he is alone, he will stand with his hands folded in Namaste to greet the guests. Well, the guests would have mostly left by that time.

There are occasions when he is totally opposite of it. We go to a play arena in the weekend, where a toy train operates. He would run after the passing by train and wave to say good bye. Few times, he would even go up to strangers and surprise them with a hello.

Just other day, there was a kid from neighborhood who visited our home. My son was cautious of what the other child could play with. But as fate had it planned, his favorite toy was in hands of the other child who would not return it. And, my child gave it without any protest.  On another occasion, he did not let a second child touch his toys at all. You can never predict how kids behave!

There are infinite factors affecting a child’s behavior and after two years I have resigned from trying to understand them all. Do your kids also behaves in unpredictable fashion? How do you teach them to have a balanced outlook in life?

I feel some kids are conscious about their impression on others. So , the behavior varies. Even they behave differently from person to person. I had a student who never uttered a word in class but never stopped at home !

Believe me, I could write a book on the unpredictability of kids! Both my kids are poles apart and yet when it comes to throwing tantrums they compete with each other. Enjoy this phase, they change every day as they grow up!

Kids are full of surprises and be it lamb or lion in my case I have seen they can be both within home too.
They will behave exact opposite at the least expected places.
Nice post and we as parents should be able to let them what they want to be and help them explain and understand the situation instead of labeling them.

I can totally relate to this as kids behavior changes not one with change in place but as per age too..my girl was more easy to handle before now her mood swings are hard to handle

I couldn’t say that’s exactly true for my son. My kid is just so unpredictable, though he’s learning things gradually and I’m still happy about how he is. Thanks for sharing. #MyFriendAlexa #CloudandSunshineReads

With age kids learn to control their emotions & that’s always work in progress. Thanks for visiting.

To answer your question: Kids watch and mirror the environment in their homes. So, as adults the onus lies on us to give them a nurturing environment where they can express and grow. Thank you for writing such a thought-provoking post.
