Quiet times! #AtoZChallenge

Last Chapter

30 June,2015

Natasha and Ananth had planned to go on vacation before the baby comes. The two of them wanted to spend some time together before they became three.

Ananth had kept the destination a secret and taken up all the responsibility from planning the vacation to completing all bookings. Natasha knew that they were going out of the country because Ananth had insisted for her to take all necessary vaccinations before travelling. She was still unsure of whether it was a beach vacation or mountains. Ananth even took care of her packing.

‘Ananth, give me a hint. I should know whether I am going to look like a buffoon in swimwear or will have to carry extra weight of woolens along with the baby bump!’, Natasha gave a last attempt to know the destination. Still Ananth gave her no clue.

The day had finally arrived when they would be going on their official BabyMoon. Mumbai weather is known to be unpredictable in the monsoons and it had been raining incessantly since last night.

‘Nats, we will leave early for airport as the roads might be jammed due to rains. Be ready by 4.’, Ananth told her before leaving for office in the morning.

As the day progressed Natasha was getting worried because of the weather. But, she brushed aside the negative thoughts and focused on the upcoming trip.

‘I am leaving from office and should be home on time’, told Ananth on the phone call.

‘Okay, See you soon!’

By now, there was news of water filling up on streets. ‘It happens every year’, thought Natasha. She was surfing news channels to get the current updates about the situation in the city. The JVLR highway was blocked and so were the underpasses in Andheri.  Thoughts of Ananth not reaching home on time were creating havoc in her mind. The clock struck 3:30, when she her phone buzzed.

‘Hello, where are you? When are you reaching home?’, blurted Natasha as soon as she picked up the call. All she wanted was to spend some quiet time with Ananth and weather was playing games now.

Never again! #AtoZChallenge

Last chapter

‘Never again Ananth. I had enough of it.’, yelled Natasha.

‘But honey, its for your own good. You need the classes to be prepared.’, said Ananth trying to convince Natasha to attend the prenatal classes.

‘Ananth, you are aware that I am not wired for so much patience and even our mothers gave birth without attending any classes.’, replied Natasha.

‘But…’

‘Not another word Ananth.’

‘Okay, what if I will come with you for the classes. Why should you go alone?’, replied Ananth.

It was thus decided that Ananth would accompany Natasha for the next class before she stops going altogether. The next Wednesday Ananth dutifully reported for the class where he found Natasha smirking. There were ten couples attending the class with them.

‘Hello all, today we will be talking about the birthing process.’, announced the trainer as each couple looked around nervously.

The next thirty minutes were the longest Ananth had ever spent as he tried to shut out the world around him and to stop listening to what the trainer was speaking. The detailed instructions about the pelvic floor and the birthing video were scary for him and he had decided he would never force Natasha again!

‘Who ever came up with the idea to invent these classes? Why would you force 10 pregnant women together in a single room with only one loo? And, why invite husbands to attend it? I would have been happier without knowing it all.’ spoke Ananth in a single breath.

Natasha did not reply and gave him a I-already-told-you-so look.

Ananth continued,’ And what is up with her telling every five minutes about not panicking. The situations demands panicking. I will have to learn few relaxations techniques myself to calm myself if I have to accompany you in the labor room.’

‘Do they realize that birthing plans are the most absurd things. Who would want to write that I plan to suffer in pain and have maximum contractions. No body wants it. We all plan for two minutes birth with zero degree of pain.’, spoke Natasha breaking her silence.

‘Now you understand what I was saying earlier about not wanting to attend the class. I do not want to discuss my feelings with random strangers. I am never coming back.’, said Natasha firmly.

This discussion of wanting and not wanting to attend the classes continued till the next week when they again attended the session. They both had their inhibitions and shared jokes about the classes. But, in reality they were both thankful to get the understanding and find people like them with whom they could easily connect. The never again saga was soon buried away.

Love comes in all forms! #AtoZChallenge

Last chapter

‘Ananth, don’t be a kid and stop fooling around. You are not going with me.’,chided Natasha.

‘Nats, I am already missing out so much. You can’t say no every time. I have not heard the heartbeat since so long’, replied Ananth with puppy eyes.

‘It’s just a normal routine checkup and Maa is going with me. I will record the heartbeat for you.You still need to rest at least on weekends.’, said Natasha.

This was a normal routine in Natasha’s household since last two months. Ananth’s movement was still restricted because of his surgery and he always complained about not being able to accompany Natasha for her doctor’s visit. He was trying all he could to help her with the pregnancy. She is almost half way through her pregnancy and there are numerous incidents that she could recall.

Just last week she was craving for her favorite ice cream late night and crying because she could not go out to eat it.Blame her hormones, but she was angry at Ananth for not being able to drive and take her out. Ananth very calmly ordered a home delivery for her ice cream.

Another day she was being very forgetful and was trying to open the car with her home keys. After trying for minutes she turned around to find Ananth coming with the original keys. Once when she wanted to bake a cake at home with zero ingredients available and he made a cake out of Dhokla mixture. It might not have tasted like a chocolate cake but it’s the best she ever had.

She cannot even forget the time when she had forgotten to turn off the gas stove while leaving for work in the morning. When she had returned in the evening, the house smelled of gas. She had never seen him so furious. He might not speak but she understood his concern even when he was angry.

All these incidents might look small to others, but every effort counts. It made her fall in love all over again with Ananth. It’s rightly said that love comes in all forms, silence and words alike.

Keep it simple! #AtoZChallenge

Last Chapter

After weeks of hassle, things were now looking up. Natasha’s parents were staying with them for time being. She was nearing the end of her first trimester and already planning how she would be spending her maternity break.

One moment she can be elated and in the next moment she would be bawling her eyes out over the events of last month. As it is, she suffered enough mood swings without being pregnant and now she was a walking pile of emotions. She would start crying at advertisements or start smiling at small things like getting an ice cream. And, she was told this is just the beginning!

She had not disclosed about her pregnancy in office and was still contemplating the future. To say or not to say summed up her daily struggle. She did not look pregnant but still she felt pregnant. She was unsure of how her colleagues would react. Her friends at work would be pretty excited or maybe she will get silent stares.

Things took a crazy turn when she broke down in office once after having a bad day. Back to back meetings and deliverable drove her mad. She loves her work and office but the emotions are running to high. And most of her meetings are spent running between the conference room and the loo. It would be better if she shifted her desk next to the toilets. At least it would save some time.

Maybe she can send out a mailer ‘I am expecting’ or sing it on top of her voice or paste the ultrasound scan photos on her boss’s desk! Too many thoughts and too much time to declare herself pregnant. Maybe she should just keep it simple!

Natasha was numb, she was already scared for Ananth and now her child’s life was in danger. She was trying her best to stay positive, but the extent of events was taking a toll on her. A week back she was living her dream and now the life has come to a standstill.

The doctor was checking fetal heartbeat with Doppler,’Natasha take deep breaths, you need to relax.’

‘Fetal heart rate is strong at 148. We will be performing an ultrasound to be on safer side.’

‘Okay, do all that you need to. The baby should be fine.’, replied Natasha.

‘The baby is developing distinct facial features and seems to be doing fine. As I have said earlier the heartbeat is strong and you can hear for yourself.’, confirmed the doctor.

No other sound was as melodious as her child’s heartbeat for Natasha. The doctor had decided to monitor her health for coming 12 hours and advised her bed rest for next two weeks.

Their parents were worried, as three lives were at stake. They were prepared for worst. The night was the longest one. None had slept.

Natasha wanted to be with Ananth, his words could calm her. Her thoughts were scary and she had nightmares about losing her child. She wanted to hear from Ananth that everything would be all right, but today he was fighting his own battle.

After the night full of agony, doctor declared that all was well and discharged her. Ananth’s doctor also gave him a go ahead to be released from hospital.

By evening they were both at home with an eerie silence around them. They were facing an uncertain future where juggling life continues.
