Once upon a time in the Land of Yore lived all years together. They would all dance & sing, share ups & downs & exchange stories of their times. But one year always felt excluded from the all the celebrations and the younger ones were always curious to know more about it. That year was 2020!
One fine day, the younger years like 3030, 3031 and 3032 were adamant on knowing the story of 2020 and thus surrounded him with all the questions. How? What? Why? Where and When? – that’s how the story of all events that unfolded was told.
Year 2020 began his life story with the month of January when the country called Australia was suffering worst bush fire in ages and the loss of wildlife was huge. The mental trauma and physical scars were long lasting. The economic loss had plunged many into darkness and the impact on the stratosphere was felt across continents.
The younger years were stressed just on hearing the beginning, but they wanted to continue listening and to learn all that they can. Year 2020 had a sullen look on his face as he continued further. The world was still overcoming the wrath of bush-fire when the news of a mysterious disease were coming from different parts of the world. As March rolled over, the whole world had come to a standstill.
The disease became a pandemic with loss of life all over the world and no end in sight. Corona Virus or ‘Covid 19’ as it was called had brought humanity to its knees. People feared meeting others or going out. Everyone was treated with a suspicion as the carrier of the virus and there were varying theories about how it all started.
3031 suddenly interrupted and asked why was it named ‘Covid 19’ as the year was 2020. The truth was that the cases of this virus had started in November of 2019, but took a drastic turn in 2020. There was a lack of communication between world health officials and the originating country. And, then humanity learnt the first lesson of the year 2020 that was to have transparent communication between the countries and the various global organizations. It was not easy to follow it and took several consecutive years for humanity to accept this lesson.
As the months went by, the focus of personal health and hygiene was the go to word. People learnt to maintain social distancing and to wear protective face masks. To some extent, it was helpful in curtailing the spread of Corona virus. Healthy eating habits and indoor exercising became norm. Small kids perfect the art of washing hands and sanitization.
People were locked inside homes and quarantined. Schools were shut down and kids had no where to go. The offices all over shifted the focus to work from home opportunity. The malls and shopping centers were closed and online shopping took precedence. Birthdays, engagements and weddings were celebrated over Zoom meetings. Well, going digital was both a bane and a boon for humanity. Online learning and being able to work from anywhere made things convenient. But, people also realized not to take their loved ones for granted and to spend adequate time with them.
Towards the end of the year, the world was still living with the trauma of Covid and many people lost their loved ones. At the end of the tunnel, there was a hope of vaccine being found which would save the world. Multiple vaccines were found effective in the next year and the world adapted the new normal way of living.
That was the story of 2020, which had highs and lows, but also valuable lessons with it. Hope the coming years are kind to us and Cheers to the high spirit of life!
