Chhattisgarh boosts of maximum number of tribal in the country. One interesting theory that a seleceted sect of people believe is the name of the state originates from 36 ancient forts in the region(Chhattis – 36, garh – fort).Β Another group believes it to be a distorted form of Chedisgarh (Land of Chedis). The place with an interesting history of name is bound to be a beautiful land!
Customs
The people worship folk-mythical gods and goddesses in form of terracotta figurines. Another intriguing custom from Gond tribe in Chhattisgarh is that the young boys and girls are sent to joint school, Ghotul, to teach tenets of social, religious and artistic life. After a couple spends time together and decide to get spend life together, they are married according to traditional methods. That’s a progressive way to approach life, we can all learn from them! π
Dance
Chhattisgarh flaunts its own unique dance styles. “Raut Nacha”Β – the folk dance of cowherds, Panthi and Soowa dance styles are very popular in the region. Every occasion be it childbirth or marriage celebrations has a folklore associated with it. People love their colors be and prefer multi hued dresses.
Special Mentions
The state is called the ‘Rice Bowl of India’ and also few tribes feast on red ants. Daring people they are! π
